Publication:
·         Star Wars #81, Marvel Comics
·         Classic Star Wars: A Long Time Ago… vol. 5: Fool’s Bounty, Dark Horse Comics
·         Omnibus: A Long Time Ago… vol. 4, Dark Horse Comics
Continuty: This story features the return of Boba Fett, both from and to the Sarlaac pit. Other timelines place the events of The Bounty Hunter Wars after this comic, but as this was considered apocryphal when the latter was written, it seems unnecessary. I prefer to think that if these events happened at all, they happened before the trio left Tatooine during Episode VI. One could place the Bounty Hunter Wars here, as it would resolve the continuity problem with the comic. However, since that was not the intent of K.W. Jeter, and the notion that Boba Fett manages to escape TWICE from the Sarlacc is pretty ludicrous. I prefer to think of these as an alternate telling of the events.

Children’s Book: Eleanor Ehrhardt
Publication: Random House
Placement: Originally, this was set just before Episode IV as a tale leading into Chewbacca’s 200th birthday. Unfortunately, A.C. Crispin tightened up the timeline by having Lumpy born around this time. In addition, though most official sources say that Chewbacca was 200 at the time of Episode IV, Ryder Windham made a reference to the wookiee being over 200 years old in a story set prior to the Battle of Yavin. So, perhaps Chewie just stopped counting his birthdays after the 200th? We can probably assume that Crispin was ignoring it when she wrote Rebel Dawn. (See note for A Forest Apart), but fortunately for us, Lumpy’s age seems consistent with his appearance in “Wookiee World.” The fact that Han and Chewie have been on a “three-year mission” actually fits rather well with the timeframe in which the Rebels have been on the run, and is perhaps better phrasing for Han’s rebellion career than his smuggling days. Of course, several months of that “mission” were spent with Han being in carbonite, but of course there is no way for Lumpy to know this.

X-WING: ROGUE SQUADRON
THE REBEL OPPOSITION

Graphic Novel: Michael A. Stackpole and Mike Baron
Publication:
·         #1-4, Dark Horse Comics
·         Omnibus vol. 1, Dark Horse Comics
Continuity: The comic refers to a Grand Admiral having taken over the Imperial fleet about five years too early, and a major plot element is based on a complete misreading of Timothy Zahn’s description of the character Winter. (In the novel in which she is introduced, Leia is wistfully thinking that Winter was constantly being mistaken for the Princess precisely because she did NOT look like her, i.e., Winter was taller, more graceful, etc., and people made the wrong assumption based on her regal appearance. Someone reading carelessly thought that Zahn meant that Leia and Winter were lookalikes, and the mistake has been perpetuated ever since.)

Publication:
·         Star Wars #107, Marvel Comics
·         Classic Star Wars: A Long Time Ago… vol. 7: Far, Far Away, Dark Horse Comics
·         Omnibus: A Long Time Ago… vol. 5, Dark Horse Comics
Placement: 5 months after the Battle of Endor (per The Forgotten War). The Nagai invasion was truncated when the Star Wars comics were abruptly canceled. The last issue shows Luke with much longer hair, seemingly indicating that months have gone by. However, because the entire Marvel line was more or less ignored, or at least not factored into the newer comics and novels, when the decision was made to re-include them into a marginal canon status, the entire post-Endor series was compressed into a single month. Like the revamped first year of the Clone Wars, we can probably assume that these are not really literal periods of time. Any attempt to weave the newer stories in causes other problems, not the least of which is the fact that the New Republic officially came into being a month after Endor, and all of the Marvel comics refer to the Alliance of Free Planets. However, since the Rogues still refer to themselves primarily as “Alliance” and seldom as “New Republic,” it seems fair to suggest that these two time periods can indeed overlap, particularly since the X-Wing characters more or less disappear from the scene in the latter Marvel comics. This placement, not far from my original slot, is per “The Forgotten War: The Nagai and the Tofs” by James McFadden.

Ruminations: This story illustrates the (in my way of thinking, unfortunate) necessity of reading all formats for full understanding of continuity, as the character of Bib Fortuna is still “warped,” to use Michael Stackpole’s terminology, from M. Shayne Bell’s short story “Of the Day’s Annoyances.” His condition makes no sense for anyone who has not read the novels or anthologies.
Canon Level: Legends

LUKE SKYWALKER
AND THE SHADOWS OF MINDOR

Novel: Matthew Woodring Stover
Publication: Del Rey Books
Placement: 6 months after the Battle of Endor. Matt Stover wrote this story inspired by the reference to Lord Shadowspawn in the Essential Chronologies. Interestingly, though, his scenario only vaguely resembles that story, and the incidents there are dated at 5½ A.B.Y., and his interpretation of them is dated at 4½ A.B.Y (six months after the Battle of Endor, to be more precise—unless perhaps this is a reference to the Second Battle of Endor from the Marvel Comics, which seems unlikely). The official line is that the story now takes place at 5.1 A.B.Y.. Depending on one’s math, this could make sense, but in keeping with all of the other stories internally or externally dated in terms of months after the Battle of Endor, I have left it here, with the caviat that you can assume that it takes place at 4½, 5.1, or even 5½ after the Battle of Yavin, but it will not change the reading order that much, so I am going with what Stover has said in the beginning of his novel. Luke is said to be twenty-four, which flows nicely with his given age of twenty-three in the novelization of Episode V. Though the recent Lucasfilm timeline has nailed down Luke and Leia’s age to nineteen at the time of Episode IV, this is the most internally consistent approach. Luke’s age in the films is “two decades” in Episode IV (could be read as a high rounding of nineteen), and twenty-three in Episode V. Six Tatooine months have passed by the time of Episode VI, according to James Kahn’s novelization.
Something to bear in mind: This novel strongly implies that there are, even in-universe, already a number of tales told about the heroes of Star Wars that may not be strictly true. In doing this, Stover has brilliantly given us an “out” for stories that don’t quite seem to jibe (and wisely allows us to determine for ourselves just which those might be, rather than treading into dangerous territory and risking offending fans by declaring with finality that their favorite works are apocryphal).

PROPHETS OF THE DARK SIDE

Junior Novel: Paul and Hollace Davids

Continuity: This six-book series ends with the beginning of Han and Leia’s wedding. The Davids have claimed that they intended to write further novels, and that the marriage would have been interrupted. However, without the actual novels to substantiate that claim, it would appear that these events are apocryphal to some degree. It has been suggested, due to a reference to Leia Organa Solo in the Dark Forces novels that follow, that perhaps their marriage was annulled, and their official marriage was later, in The Courtship of Princess Leia. I prefer to think that this is simply one of the many cases where certain elements of the story have been included in canon, but not the story as a whole. This series has been placed at 5 A.B.Y. in the official chronology, though the text says it has been almost a year since the Battle of Endor, which tells me that it could indeed take place late in the year following the demise of the Emperor. (Of course, it could very well still be 5 A.B.Y., considering that Episode VI may not take place near the beginning of the year.)

A FOREST APART
A CHEWBACCA ADVENTURE

Novella: Troy Denning
Publication: Tatooine Ghost (paperback), Del Rey Books
Placement: 8 A.B.Y. (3661 A.T.C.) Lumpy is referred to as being eleven years old in this story. Moreover, the interview at the end of the paperback indicates that this story is meant to immediately precede Tatooine Ghost. However, Leland Chee has said that Lumpy’s birth within a year before Episode IV is canonical, which means that The Wookiee Storybook and The Star Wars Holiday Special have been rescinded in canonicity, and the age given in this story is inaccurate. It seems likely that Denning knew that Rebel Dawn began in 3 BBY, and that Lumpy was born in that book. He was apparently not aware that the book covered three years, Lumpy’s birth being towards the end, not the beginning of those years (3 + 8 does = 11). Still, it is really Crispin’s dates that have caused more trouble, as she has Lumpy born in the same year in which he appears as a walking, talking young wookiee who has not seen his father in three years (see The Wookiee Storybook). Lumpy is described as ten years old in the behind-the-scenes material for The Holiday Special, which would put all of the other dates off, as well.

“MISSION TO ZILA”
FROM THE ADVENTURES OF ALEX WINGER

Short Story: Charlene Simser (as Charlene Newcomb)
Publication: The Official Star Wars Adventure Journal vol. 1, #3, West End Games
Placement: The stories refer to a Grand Admiral having taken over the fleet (also referred to in the first X-Wing: Rogue Squadron story arc, but there’s not much I can do about that), and mention that rumors of the push towards Coruscant giving the natives of Garos IV hope. This is probably due to the fact that Heir to the Empire would seem to imply that the takeover of the capitol was much closer to that story than the official chronology later required. How they are so woefully out of date on intelligence regarding the taking of Coruscant and yet so well-informed regarding this Grand Admiral is beyond me. The wording, however, could be taken to emphasize the “rumors,” rather than the “push,” and thus infer that the hope had lingered since the actual rumors began (and presumably through the actual push and taking of Coruscant).  Yes, it’s a bit of a stretch, but it does work.

DARK EMPIRE

Graphic Novel: Tom Veitch
Publication:
·         #1-6, Dark Horse Comics
·         Dark Empire I, Dark Horse Comics
·         Luke Skywalker, Last Hope for the Galaxy, Dark Horse Comics
·         Dark Empire Trilogy, Dark Horse Comics
Continuity: Dark Empire was originally designed to take place directly after the Marvel series (and was, in fact, slated to be published by Marvel). However, due to Timothy Zahn’s understandable refusal to reference it in his own novels (which took a vastly different approach to the post-Endor events), Tom Veitch moved his placement back to directly after Zahn’s trilogy. As a result, the civil war on Coruscant, rather than being a direct result of the fall of the Empire, now had to be roughly shoehorned into a scenario in which the New Republic had lost control of the planet. This series caused some consternation for Kevin J. Anderson, as well, who made adjustments to his own novels to incorporate the fallout of this comic series. (This has caused no end of confusion for novel readers, as multiple references to some rather significant and seemingly out-of-place events seem non sequiter in a book-only context.) Though the series suffers from poor characterization and questionable writing quality (not to mention the infamous comic book tendency to resurrect popular villains), it is famous for a number of reasons, not the least of which is Cam Kennedy’s striking artwork.

LIGHTSIDER

Novella: Tom Veitch
Continuity: Unpublished. The Lightsider prose novella was supposed to have multiple page-size panel illustrations, like the Dark Forces trilogy. It was designed by Veitch to be a tie-in with a game he had designed. However, due to a dispute about creator’s rights, the novella was cancelled, and the game never came to be. The origins of Kam Solusar were adapted into the audio dramatizations of Dark Empire II, and Tom Veitch, rather than giving Dark Empire III (intended to be a twelve-issue magnum opus) its full due, consented to wrap up his arc in two rather pitiful and anticlimactic issues.

BOBA FETT
“AGENT OF DOOM”

Graphic Novel: John Wagner
Publication:
·         Boba Fett: Man with a Mission, Dark Horse Comics

Placement: Slave I never makes an appearance in this comic, so I have placed it after Dark Empire II. Also, one of the characters makes a reference to multiple times that Boba Fett has failed to capture Han Solo—this seems to imply all of the attempts in the Dark Empire series as well as those dating to Episode V and further back. Another one of my suggestions that seems to have stuck, if the Dark Horse Comics internal timeline is to be believed.

I, JEDI

Novel: Michael A. Stackpole
Publication: Bantam Spectra Books
Trivia: I, Jedi is a novel told first-person from Corran Horn’s point of view. It begins prior to the events of The Jedi Academy Trilogy and ends well after them. It can actually be read first, but it does “spoil” a number of key plot points. The most significant thing about it is that it overlaps and interweaves those events, giving a behind-the scenes look at Corran’s undercover time at the Praxeum.
Written at a time when fans of the novels were dividing themselves into online camps and arguing over the superiority of one author over another, this felt a bit like an “answer” to some elements of storytelling that fans of one camp felt unsatisfactory, much in the vein of Zahn’s Hand of Thrawn novels commenting retroactively on certain elements of the Dark Empire series. However, the author claims that this was not the case.

Placement: Han Solo (never named, but quoting his own lines and flashing his trademark smirk) is at a cantina, listening to “tall tales” about his own exploits (all humorously mythologized). He makes a reference to having a wife and kids to get home to, so I have placed this here, prior to his telling Anakin a bedtime story in “The Secret Adventures of Luke’s Hand.” I have also grouped a couple of other more obvious “Legends—Infinities” tales here, as stories perhaps told by Han or Leia (the way that some of the more ridiculous aspects of the Jedi Prince novels are being written off).
